Thisreviewdescribesakeyroleformononuclearphagocytesinthepathogenesisofmajorpsychiatricdisorders.Thereisaccumulatingevidenceforactivationofmicroglia(histopathologyandPETscans)andcirculatingmonocytes(enhancedgeneexpressionofimmunegenes,anoverproductionofmonocyte/macrophage‐relatedcytokines)inpatientswithbipolardisorder,majordepressivedisorder,andschizophrenia.Thesedataarestrengthenedbyobservationsinanimalmodels,suchastheMIAmodels,thechronicstressmodels,andtheNODmousemodel.Intheseanimalmodelsofdepressive‐,anxiety‐,andschizophrenia‐likebehavior,similaractivationsofmicrogliaandcirculatingmonocytescanbefound.Theseanimalmodelsalsomakein‐depthpathogenicstudiespossibleandshowthatmicrogliaactivationimpactsneuronaldevelopmentandfunctioninbrainareascongruentwiththealtereddepressiveandschizophrenia‐likebehaviors...
