Over the past 18 months, the World Bankhas been working on a comprehensive plan to address thechallenge of productive jobs in Tanzania. This studyrepresents a step towards a better understanding of how topromote job creation in Tanzania. Indeed, the growth ofproductive jobs is vital for alleviating poverty andpromoting shared prosperity - two important goals ofTanzania's economic strategy. This booklet highlightsthe three-pillar plan for job creation derived from theTanzania country economic memorandum. The first pillar looksat job creation from the angle of small non-farm businesses,which have been growing very fast during the rapidurbanization. The second pillar focuses on farms becausethose still capture the largest share of employment inTanzania, while the third pillar discusses the job-creationpotential associated with business expansion into newmarkets. By focusing on a comprehensive set of concreteactions, the goal is to stimulate debate as well as to buildownership and accountability among policy-makers and keystakeholders in the country.
