This paper focuses on evaluations withfindings that challenge important assumptions of thedevelopment field. Its objective is to pinpoint the areas towatch for in operations or policies that are decisive forresults. By drawing the attention of developmentpractitioners, policy makers, and evaluators to theseseemingly obvious but often neglected areas, it aims toimprove development effectiveness by better connectinginterventions to desired results. The lessons follow alogical path from which results should be the focus ofattention, to how those results are measured, to how to useevaluation for better results. The examples are mainly drawnfrom the work of the Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) ofthe World Bank Group.
