This report presents findings of socialresearch conducted in the Akshiyrak Aiyl Okmotu ofKyrgyzstan (located in Jeti-Oguz raion, Issykkul province).The aim of the research was to study the current socialsituation in Akshiyrak Aiyl Okmotu and the potential social,economic, and ecological impact of the construction andoperation of the mine at the Togolok gold deposit. Thefindings of the research will be used by the World Bank forassisting and advising the Government of the Kyrgyz Republicon conducting the tender for the Togolok gold deposit.Pastexperiences have demonstrated that mining can have severalpositive and negative impacts on the communities surroundingthe mine. This research project was intended to offer apartial insight into how the presence of a gold mine mayimpact Akshiyrak.To fulfill the aim of the research,firstly, a desk study was conducted which looked at thecommunity involvement in the mining sector in Kyrgyzstanincluding the relevant legislation. Secondly, fieldwork wasundertaken in the Akshiyrak Aiyl Okmotu where interviews andfocus groups with key actors and residents of the communitywere held. Finally, the findings of the research werepresented by the research team to representatives of theAkshiyrak community in a validation workshop and thefindings were adjusted accordingly.
