The goal of this book is to shed lighton the extent to which Nigeria's much improved economicperformance has impacted the labor market, and to develop agrowth strategy that can enhance the employment intensity ofgrowth. The report consists of six chapters. Chapter oneprovides an overview of the book's main findings,reviews Nigeria's growth performance from 2001 to 2007,and addresses the question of the sustainability of thatgrowth performance. Chapter two analyzes the evolution ofthe labor market since 1999. The analysis focuses on theshare of the formal and informal sectors in employment, thetrend in incomes in the formal and the informal sectors, andthe unemployment rate. Chapter three addresses the questionof what Nigeria can do to increase the availability ofquality jobs and reduce rising youth unemployment. Chapterfour discusses Nigeria's industrial policy andinvestment environment. Chapter five proposes strategies forskills development; and chapter six analyzes the effects ofrestrictive trade policies.
