Trade Policy, Trade Volumes, and Plant-Level Productivity in Colombian Manufacturing Industries

【 摘 要 】

Fernandes explores Colombian tradepolicy from 1977-91, a period of substantial variation inprotection across industries, to examine whether increasedexposure to foreign competition generates plant-levelproductivity gains. Using a large panel of manufacturingplants, she finds a strong positive impact of tariffliberalization on consistent productivity estimates,controlling for plant and industry heterogeneity. Thisresult is not driven by the endogeneity of protection nor byplant exit. The impact of tariff liberalization onproductivity is stronger for large plants and for plants inless competitive industries. Qualitatively similar resultsare obtained when using effective rates of protection andimport penetration ratios as measures of protection
