【 摘 要 】
The little data book on private sectordevelopment coincides with the unfolding of the globalfinancial crisis. There is strong evidence that crises canstimulate reform of the investment climate. A betterinvestment climate makes economic adjustment easier andhelps attract capital to create jobs and provide basicservices. Well functioning finance markets and a robustprivate sector are critical in increasing productivity andgrowth and in spreading equality of opportunity. Theavailability of cross-country data on the businessenvironment has expanded rapidly in recent years, includingdata from the World Bank's doing business project andenterprise surveys. These data show the scope and types ofregulations that enhance and constrain business activitywhile providing information on business owners'assessments of the business environment. Included in thisguide are indicators on the economic and social context, thebusiness environment, private sector investment, finance andbanking, and infrastructure. Though a pocket guide cannotinclude all relevant variables, the indicators that areincluded provide users with a general understanding of theprivate sector in each country. Indicators displayed in thetables are defined in the glossary, which also lists data sources.
