【 摘 要 】
Poor rural women in the developing worldspend considerable time collecting water. How then do theyrespond to improved access to water infrastructure? Does itincrease their participation in income earning market-basedactivities? Does it improve the health and educationoutcomes of their children? To help address these questions,a new approach for dealing with the endogeneity ofinfrastructure placement in cross-sectional surveys isproposed and implemented using data for nine developingcountries. The paper does not find that access to watercomes with greater off-farm work for women, although incountries where substantial gender gaps in schooling exist, both boys' and girls' enrollments improve withbetter access to water. There are also some signs of impactson child health as measured by anthropometric z-scores.
