Ensuring that children are healthy andable to learn is an essential component of an effectiveeducation system. Good health increases enrollment andreduces absenteeism, and brings more of the poorest and mostdisadvantaged children to school, many of whom are girls. Itis these children who are often the least healthy and mostmalnourished, and who have the most to gain educationallyfrom improved health. Effective school health programs thatare developed as part of community partnerships provide oneof the most cost-effective ways to reach school agechildren, adolescents, and the broader community, and are asustainable way to promote healthy practices. The new FRESHframework (Focusing Resources on Effective School Health) isthe starting point for developing an effective schoolhealth, hygiene and nutrition program in a more childfriendly and health promoting school. This Note summarizesways to improve school health and increase educational outcomes.
