Ukraine is currently classified as alower-middle income country in 2014. The country experienceda sustained economic growth since the early 2000’s, beingassociated with a fast reduction in poverty. However, theglobal financial and economic crisis hit the economy ofUkraine, generating one of the largest economic setbacks inEastern Europe. To address these issues, this paper isfocused at three dimensions of gender disparities inUkraine: i) agency as ability to make decisions and takeopportunities; ii) endowments, including education, healthand demography; and iii) economic opportunities realizedthrough access to the labour market and earnings. The paperis structured as follows. Chapter one is devoted to agency,shaping the process of using endowments by women in men,including legislation and institutional environment,political participation and decision-making, genderstereotypes in public attitudes, and subjective well-being.In Chapter two we examine the gender gaps in endowmentsacross men and women, captured by enrolment to variouseducation levels and preferred fields of study. This Chapteris also focused at the current demographic trends and theirgender implications, as well as at the gender disparities inhealth, with a particular emphasis on communicable diseasesand reproductive health. Chapter three examines the gendergaps in labour force participation and patterns ofemployment, including vulnerable and informal employment,gender-based segregation and labour migrations. The gap inearnings is analyzed in details by backgroundcharacteristics of employment. The problem of poverty andvulnerability is outlined in gender dimension in thisChapter as well. Finally, the gender inequality inopportunities of career advancement is discussed in Chapterthree, as well as disparities in financial inclusion andaccess to entrepreneurship in Ukraine. In Chapter four, wepresent some basic conclusions and policy recommendations ofthe revealed gender gaps.
