This report provides an overview ofjobs, workers, and employment opportunities in Nigeria, usingrecent household data. Jobs are critical for Nigeria’spresent and future, as better jobs and income-earningopportunities form the basis for more diversified economicgrowth, poverty reduction, and greater prosperity. Thisreport relies heavily on the wealth of information gatheredthrough the General Household Survey conducted by theNational Bureau of Statistics. The diagnostics included inthis report are intended to describe the landscape of jobsin the country and provide broad analysis as an input intothe development of a jobs strategy for Nigeria. The analysisconducted for this report has highlighted three areas thatneed attention: (i) data quality issues, as shown in theseveral rounds of data cleaning needed to provide consistentstatistics; (ii) poor documentation and archiving, whichprevented the use of several rounds of the household survey, especially to produce national-level statistics usingpopulation weights; and (iii) standardization, to permitcomparisons of key variables over time and track the impactof policy changes and other events. As shown in this report, many Nigerians work, but generally in low-earningactivities. Most work opportunities in the country areinformal and do not come with a wage. This report presentsan updated picture of jobs in Nigeria and identifiesopportunities for improving the quality of jobs. This reporthas shown that Nigeria combines middle-income status andAfrica’s largest economic power with high poverty levels, largely because the main sectors of economic growth aredisconnected from the sectors that provide employment, notably subsistence activities in the agricultural andservices sectors. Finally, the diagnostics included in thisreport show that both new and existing jobs, whether inagriculture or other sectors, will need to be moreproductive to help the population move out of low-earningemployment and poverty.
