Microbial-plant interactions protect plants from external stimuli, releasing various elicitor that activate the plants defense response and regulate its growth. Bacillus subtilis BS-Z15 was screened from cotton inter-rhizosphere soil, antagonized various plant pathogens, and protected cotton against Verticillium dahliae. This study showed that the BS-Z15 lipopeptide mycosubtilin homologue could act as an elicitor to induce systemic resistance (ISR) in plants. Mycosubtilin homologue induced ROS burst and deposition, callose deposition, MAPK cascade phosphorylation, and up-regulated PR1 and PDF1.2 gene expression in Arabidopsis seedlings, moreover enhanced resistance of Arabidopsis to Pseudomonas syringae pv. Tomato DC3000 (Pst DC3000) and V. dahliae. Transcriptome analysis was then used to evaluate the impact of mycosubtilin homologue on plant gene expression control. Mycosubtilin homologues activated Arabidopsis ISR on genes in metabolic pathways such as Arabidopsis plant-pathogen interactions, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, MAPK signaling pathway, and phytohormone signaling. These analyses revealed that mycosubtilin homologues mediate the regulation of plant systemic resistance and growth and development by affecting related metabolites in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis, pentose phosphate pathway, tricarboxylic acid cycle, and amino acid metabolism in Arabidopsis. These findings confirmed that a mycosubtilin homologue could trigger the initiation of the Arabidopsis ISR by interacting with a variety of PTI components and transcriptional metabolic signaling pathways.

Pennisetum alopecuroides is an important forage grass resource, which plays a vital role in ecological environment improvement. Therefore, the acquisition of P. alopecuroides genome resources is conducive to the study of the adaptability of Pennisetum species in ecological remediation and forage breeding development. Here we assembled a P. alopecuroides cv. 'Liqiu' genome at the chromosome level with a size of approximately 845.71 Mb, contig N50 of 84.83Mb, and genome integrity of 99.13% as assessed by CEGMA. A total of 833.41-Mb sequences were mounted on nine chromosomes by Hi-C technology. In total, 60.66% of the repetitive sequences and 34,312 genes were predicted. The genomic evolution analysis showed that P. alopecuroides cv. 'Liqiu' was isolated from Setaria 7.53–13.80 million years ago and from Cenchrus 5.33–8.99 million years ago, respectively. The whole-genome event analysis showed that P. alopecuroides cv. 'Liqiu' underwent two whole-genome duplication (WGD) events in the evolution process, and the duplication events occurred at a similar time to that of Oryza sativa and Setaria viridis. The completion of the genome sequencing of P. alopecuroides cv. 'Liqiu' provides data support for mining high-quality genetic resources of P. alopecuroides and provides a theoretical basis for the origin and evolutionary characteristics of Pennisetum.

Peanut flavor is a complex and important trait affected by raw material and processing technology owing to its significant impact on consumer preference. In this research, principal component analysis (PCA) on 33 representative traits associated with flavor revealed that total sugars, sucrose, and total tocopherols provided more information related to peanut flavor. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) using 102 U.S. peanut mini-core accessions were performed to study associations between 12,526 single nucleotide polymorphic (SNP) markers and the three traits. A total of 7 and 22 significant quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were identified to be significantly associated with total sugars and sucrose, respectively. Among these QTLs, four and eight candidate genes for the two traits were mined. In addition, two and five stable QTLs were identified for total sugars and sucrose in both years separately. No significant QTLs were detected for total tocopherols. The results from this research provide useful knowledge about the genetic control of peanut flavor, which will aid in clarifying the molecular mechanisms of flavor research in peanuts.

IntroductionIn this study, we aimed to estimate the genetic parameters of the reproductive traits in three popular commercial pig breeds: Duroc, Landrace, and Yorkshire. Additionally, we evaluated the factors that influence these traits.MethodWe collected data from a large number of litters, including 1,887 Duroc, 21,787 Landrace, and 74,796 Yorkshire litters. Using the ASReml-R software to analyze 11 traits, which included: total number of pigs born (TNB); number of piglets born alive (NBA); number of piglets born healthy (NBH); number of piglets born weak (NBW); number of new stillborn piglets (NS); number of old stillborn piglets (OS); number of piglets born with malformation (NBM); number of mummified piglets (NM); total litter birthweight (LBW); litter average weight (LAW); duration of gestational period (GP). We investigated the effects of 4 fixed factors on the genetic parameters of these traits.ResultsAmong the 11 reproductive-related traits, the gestational period belonged to the medium heritability traits (0.251–0.430), while remaining traits showed low heritability, ranging from 0.005 to 0.159. TNB, NBA, NBH, LBW had positive genetic correlation (0.737 ~ 0.981) and phenotype correlation (0.711 ~ 0.951). There was a negative genetic correlation between NBW and LAW (−0.452 ~ −0.978) and phenotypic correlation (−0.380 ~ −0.873). LBW was considered one of the most reasonable reproductive traits that could be used for breeding improvement. Repeatability of the three varieties was within the range of 0.000–0.097. In addition, the fixed effect selected in this study had a significant effect on Landrace and Yorkshire (p < 0.05).DiscussionWe found a positive correlation between LBW and TNB, NBA, and NBH, suggesting the potential for multi-trait association breeding. Factors such as farm, farrowing year, breeding season, and parity should be taken into consideration in practical production, as they may impact the reproductive performance of breeding pigs.
