【 摘 要 】

Previously,compiler transformationshaveprimarily focusedonminimizing program execution time.This thesis explores some examplesofapplyingcompilertechnologyoutsideofitsoriginalscope.Specifically,we applycompiler analysisto thefieldof softwaremaintenanceandevolutionbyexaminingtheuseofglobaldatathroughoutthe lifetimesofmany opensourceprojects.Also,weinvestigatetheeffectsofcompileroptimizationsonthepowerconsumptionof smallbattery powereddevices. Finally,inan areacloser totraditional compiler research weexamine automatic programparallelization in the form of thread-level speculation.
