【 摘 要 】
This report is the second in a series ofstudies on transport and aid effectiveness in Sub-SaharanAfrica. It follows a study on transport costs and pricesalong the main international trade corridors (Teravaninthornand Raballand 2008). One of the principal findings of theresearch on international corridors in Africa was thattrucking market structure and regulation differ widely amongsub-regions in Sub-Saharan Africa; therefore, transportprices (but not necessarily transport costs)1 differ greatlyamong sub-regions and corridors. The trucking environmentand market structure in West and Central Africa arecharacterized by cartels offering low transport quality, whereas in East Africa, the trucking environment is morecompetitive and the market is more mature. Much of thetransport price burden along African corridors seems todepend on the political economy of freight logistics.
