【 摘 要 】
As illustrated in Africa's SilkRoad: China and India's New Economic Frontier, the newSouth-South economic relations present real opportunities-aswell as challenges-to African countries. They also highlightthe need for complementary reforms by China and India tosupport more vigorous African development. In analyzingAfrica's intensifying relationships with China andIndia, Africa's Silk Road examines the trends to dateand considers the implications of these developments for theeconomic future of the African continent. The diagnosiscautions that the opportunities engendered by China andIndia's trade and investment with Africa will notnecessarily be converted into growth and poverty reductionin the region. A critical finding of the study is that it isnot just the quantity of these trade and investment flowsthat matters-it is also the quality of the overallcommercial relationships underlying as well as shaping theseflows. This paper contains the following headings:connecting two continents; performance and patterns ofAfrican-Asian trade and investment flows; challenges at theborder - Africa and Asia's trade and investmentpolicies; behind-the-border constraints on African-Asiantrade and investment flows; between-the-border factors inAfrican-Asian trade and investment; and investment-tradelinkages in African-Asian commerce - scale, integration, andproduction networks.
