This country note briefly summarizesinformation relevant to both climate change and agriculturein Colombia, with focus on policy developments (includingaction plans and programs) and institutional make-up. Likemost countries in Latin America, Colombia has submitted onenational communication to the United Nations FrameworkConvention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) with a second oneunder preparation. Agriculture (including land use changeand forestry) significantly contributes to total green housegas (GHG) emissions in the country. The emission reductionpotential of the agricultural sector (including land usechange and forestry) is significant and not yet sufficientlyexplored in the country. Colombia does not count with asingle Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects in theagricultural sector. Agriculture is highly vulnerable toweather extremes, in particular on the Caribbean coast, where the threat of floods is prevalent. Reducingvulnerability to climate change is of utmost importance inthe agricultural sector in Colombia, considering the rolethe sector plays in food security and livelihoods of rural populations.
