【 摘 要 】
This paper employs decomposition methodsto analyze differences in agricultural productivity betweenmale and female land managers in Ethiopia. It employs datafrom the 2011-2012 Ethiopian Rural Socioeconomic Survey. Anoverall 23.4 percent gender differential in agriculturalproductivity is estimated at the mean in favor of male landmanagers, of which 10.1 percentage points are explained bydifferences in land manager characteristics, landattributes, and unequal access to resources (the endowmenteffect). The remaining 13.4 percentage points are explainedby unequal returns to productive components, but cannot beeasily tied to specific covariates. These results are mainlydriven by non-married female managers (mainly single anddivorced). Married female managers do not display suchdisadvantages. Further analysis along the productivitydistribution reveals that gender differentials are morepronounced at mid-levels of productivity and that the shareof the gender gap explained by the endowment effect declinesas productivity increases. Detailed decomposition ofestimates at selected points of the agriculturalproductivity distribution provides valuable information forpolicy intervention purposes.
