【 摘 要 】
This paper uses data from the GeneralHousehold Survey Panel 2010/11 to analyze differences inagricultural productivity across male and female plotmanagers in Nigeria. The analysis utilizes theOaxaca-Blinder decomposition method, which allows fordecomposing the unconditional gender gap into (i) theportion caused by observable differences in the factors ofproduction (endowment effect) and (ii) the unexplainedportion caused by differences in returns to the sameobserved factors of production (structural effect). Theanalysis is conducted separately for the North and Southregions, excluding the west of the country. The findingsshow that in the North, women produce 28 percent less thanmen after controlling for observed factors of production, while there are no significant gender differences in theSouth. In the decomposition results, the structural effectin the North is larger than the endowment at the mean.Although women in the North have access to less productiveresources than men, the results indicate that even if giventhe same level of inputs, significant differences stillemerge. However for the South, the decomposition resultsshow that the endowment effect is more important than thestructural effect. Access to resources explains most of thegender gap in the South and if women are given the samelevel of inputs as men, the gap will be minimal. Thedifference in the results for the North and South suggeststhat policy should vary by region.
