【 摘 要 】
Farming households that differ in theirability, or willingness to take on risks are likely to makedifferent decisions when allocating resources, and effortamong income-producing activities, with consequences forproductivity. The authors measure voluntary, and involuntarydepartures from efficiency for rice-producing households inBicol, Philippines. They take advantage of a panel ofhousehold observations from 1978, 1983, and 1994. Theunusually long-time span of the panel provides ampleopportunities for the surveyed households to learn, andapply successful available technologies. The authors findevidence that diversification, and technology choices doeffect outcomes among farmers, although these effects arenot dominant. Accumulated wealth, past decisions to investin education, favorable market conditions, and propitiousweather are also important determinants of efficiencyoutcomes among Bicol rice farmers.
