【 摘 要 】

Intensified efforts are needed in theCaribbean region if inroads are to be made against the AIDSepidemic. Although many Caribbean governments have initiateda limited response to HIV/AIDS, much remains to be done tobring proven interventions quickly up to nationwide scale. Moreover there is growing recognition that HIV/AIDS is notjust a serious health issue in developing countries, but amajor developmental catastrophe that threatens to dismantlethe social and economic achievements of the past halfcentury. The challenge for Caribbean countries is to learnfrom the dramatic experiences of some African countries andact decisively now to prevent the progressive extension ofthe epidemic to the general population. This report providesan overview of the challenges and opportunities inaddressing the problem of HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean. Itpresents a snapshot of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the region, offers examples of ways in which Caribbean countries andregional bodies have responded to the epidemic, discussesalternative actions for addressing the crisis, andhighlights a range of strategies for donor coordination andcooperation in the region. Finally, the report identifiesthe potential role of the World Bank in addressing theHIV/AIDS epidemic in the Caribbean.
