【 摘 要 】
This paper attempts to quantify theimpact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on social capital withcross-country data. It estimates reduced-form regressions ofthe main determinants of social capital controlling for HIVprevalence, institutional quality, social distance, andeconomic indicators using data from the World Values Survey. The results obtained indicate that HIV prevalence affectssocial capital negatively. The empirical estimates suggestthat a one standard deviation increase in HIV prevalencewill lead to a 1 percent decline in trust, controlling forother determinants of social capital. If one moves from acountry with a relatively low level of HIV prevalence suchas Estonia, to a country with a high level such as Zimbabwe, one would observe an approximate 8 percent decline in socialcapital. These results are robust in a number of dimensionsand highlight the empirical importance of an additionalmechanism through which HIV/AIDS hinders the development process.
