【 摘 要 】
The World Bank's mission is tofight poverty for lasting results. Enhancing environmentalquality, improving natural resource management, andmaintaining global ecosystems are all important stepstowards this goal. Better environmental management canimprove people's livelihoods, health, and securitytoday and in the future. To achieve these lasting results weneed to start from a sound base of information that helps usset priorities and measure progress towards environmentalsustainability goals. The Little Green Data Book is a stepin this direction. Under the headings of agriculture, forests, biodiversity, energy, emissions and pollution, water and sanitation, and "greener" nationalaccounts, it presents key indicators of the environment andits relationship to people for more than 200 countries. While there are gaps and shortcomings in the data, we hopeit will inspire decision-makers at all levels to use thisinformation and to seek to fill the gaps for their owncountries. The Little Green Book represents a succinctcollection of information from the World DevelopmentIndicators 2003 and its accompanying CD-ROM. It is acollaboration between the Development Economics DataDevelopment Group and the Environment Department of theWorld Bank.
