【 摘 要 】
The 2006 edition of the little greendata book coincides with a wave of renewed attention to theenergy sector coming out of the group of eight summit atGleneagles, Scotland. While energy demand is rising alongwith gross domestic product (GDP) in the developing world, many poor countries still lack the basic infrastructure thatsustains everyday needs. Electric power consumption percapita is 25 times lower in low-income countries than inhigh-income countries. The poorest people in the worlddepend heavily on natural resources to meet their energyneeds. In Sub-Saharan Africa nearly 60 percent of the energyused comes from combustible renewables and waste. The littlegreen data book is a step in this direction, with keyindicators of the environment and its relationship to peoplefor more than 200 countries. This year's editionincludes recently updated data on carbon dioxide emissionsand on particulate matter concentrations in urban areas, aswell as the new global environment facility (GEF) benefitsindex for biodiversity.
