The majority of Ethiopians depend onmedical plants as their only source of health care, especially in rural areas where access to villages islacking due to the absence of vehicular roads. Theincreasing scarcity of medicinal plant species represents atrend that should be immediately addressed. The health anddrug policies of the Ethiopian Ministry of Health recognizethe important role medical plants and traditional healthsystems play in health care. Unfortunately little has beendone in recent decades to enhance and develop the beneficialaspects of traditional medicine including related researchand its gradual integration into modern medicine. With theWorld Bank assistance, the Ethiopian government will soonstart to implement the first conservation and sustainableuse of medical plants project in Sub-Saharan Africa. Theoverall objective of the project is to initiate support forconservation, management, and sustainable use of medicinalplants for human and livestock health care.
