This report has been created to providepractical tools, tips, and methodologies for project leadersto integrate hygiene components into their projects. Itbuilds on available evidence about the contribution ofbehavioral change programs to the reduction of diseases, inparticular hand-washing with soap initiatives, which canbenefit health, environment, water, sanitation, andeducation projects. Project leaders should view hygienepromotion as a behavioral change process rather than aunidirectional media or education campaign. The knowledgegenerated from the research, enabling environmentassessments, and other tools can be utilized in the earlystages of project design and throughout the project cycle.It is crucial to understand the local environment to ensurethat behavior change is sustainable once the project cycleis complete. Awareness of the importance of hygiene willvary in each region; therefore, every project must startwith different assumptions. Water and Sanitation Program(WSP) and other partners continue to generate positiveexamples and lessons learned and transfer knowledge. Forexample, the Global Public-Private Partnership forhand-washing with soap helps countries close the gap as theystrive to meet the millennium development goals. The toolsand guidelines referenced in this document do not offer astrict formula, however, and should be revised and adaptedto the needs of each project. The door remains open forcontinuous learning and improvement.
