【 摘 要 】
The authors provide an empiricalanalysis of the determinants of three child-health outcomesrelated to the Millennium Development Goals: the infantmortality rate, the child mortality rate, and the prevalenceof malnutrition. Using data from Demographic and HealthSurveys, they go beyond traditional cross-countryregressions by exploiting the variability in outcomes andexplanatory variables observed within countries betweenasset quintiles. The authors show the relationships existingbetween the prevalence of diseases (diarrhea andmalnutrition) and mortality. Their findings suggest thatapart from traditional variables (income, assets, education, and direct health interventions), better access to basicinfrastructure services has an important role in improvingchild health outcomes. Their analysis of interaction effectsbetween interventions also suggests the importance ofcombining interventions to meet the Millennium Development Goals.
