【 摘 要 】
This book examines issues related toreducing inequality in Brazil. As the volume's editorsassert with authority, the current national politicalclimate in Brazil provides an unprecedented space fordiscussing this topic. Among the several investigations thathave looked at exclusion and social mobility in Brazil, veryfew have presented as much empirical evidence as the studiesincluded in this volume. In addition to reviewing thepertinent literature, Social Exclusion and Mobility inBrazil examines the changing income dynamics amonghomogeneous groups over a 20-year period. The analysispoints to factors-such as ethnicity, education, gender, occupation, and location-that affect the probability that agroup will remain in the situation of poverty. The volumealso examines Brazilians' perceptions of thesecircumstances and the cultural values that make coexistencepossible given very high levels of inequality and low levelsof mobility. It reveals that Brazilians expect the state-andonly the state-to create mechanisms capable of transformingthis situation. This volume presents a set ofrecommendations for discussion by citizens, academics, andpolicy makers. These topics include improving labor marketequality and increasing access to assets; improving thesocial security system; supporting the formation of humancapital, particularly among youth; reducing discriminationbased on characteristics such as race and gender; andstrengthening citizenship and participation.【 预 览 】
