【 摘 要 】
The study documents how people living inpoor urban communities in Colombia, perceive violence, andidentifies, the categories of violence affectingcommunities, the costs of different types of violence, theeffect of violence on social capital, and the causes, andeffects of social exclusion. Social institutions wereidentified across the nine research communities, making thedistinction between those institutions benefiting thecommunity, i.e., those creating positive social capital, andthose institutions benefiting their members, while hurtingthe community, i.e., creating perverse social capital. Thefirst group, which included primarily schools, and healthcenters, were mostly trusted, whereas those institutionsdealing with the prevention of violence, such as statesecurity, and justice institutions, were the least trusted.Interestingly, perverse organizations were the mostprevalent membership organizations, including guerrillatype, and paramilitary groups, perpetrating politicalviolence, and exercising a dominant force. The studyidentified avoidance, confrontation, conciliation, and otherlesser strategies, as forms to deal with violence, andrecommendations suggest the need to address the seriousproblem of displaced people, the unemployment situation, andabove all, the need for peace negotiation, to abolish thepervasive nature of political violence.
