【 摘 要 】
The study documents how people living inpoor urban communities in Guatemala perceive violence.Specifically, it identifies the categories of violenceaffecting poor communities, the costs of different types ofviolence, the effects on violence on social capital, theinterventions employed by people to deal with violence, andthe causes and effects of social exclusion. The studydevelops a violence-capital-exclusion nexus which is ananalytical framework linking different types of violenceboth to society's capital and to the exclusion of itspoor population. To incorporate the rarely heard voices ofthe poor, the study uses participatory urban appraisalmethodology, which emphasizes local knowledge and enableslocal people to analyze the problems they face and identifytheir own solutions. Local-level recommendations forreducing violence can be summed up in terms of sixpriorities: Rebuild trust in the police and judicial system.Attack the problem of alcoholism. Reduce society'stolerance for intrafamily violence. Prevent the spread ofdrug consumption. Transform maras (violent youth gangs) fromperverse to productive social organizations. Developmechanisms to build sustainable community-based membership organizations.
