A well-informed and knowledgeablecommunity is of vital importance for the economic and socialdevelopment of a modem society. The knowledge and skillsrequired for present day activities are much more complexthan those required in the past. Today, many jobs requireexpert thinking and non-routine analytical skills, toidentify and solve problems. Mathematics education focuseson developing a person's analytical and problem solvingabilities. Thus a high quality mathematics education winensure that students develop the skills that are essentialnot only in science and technology, but also in everydaylife and the workplace. The government of Sri Lanka,recognizing the need for a high quality mathematicseducation has implemented several reforms in the recentpast. Although the progress achieved is commendable, thereis still room for improvement in certain important aspectsof the learning teaching process. The main aim of themathematics curriculum under these reforms is to createindividuals who are able to think mathematically and applymathematical knowledge effectively and responsibly inproblem solving and decision making.
