With Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA)transitioning towards the Right To Education (RTE), teachereducation institutions and systems need to be fully gearedup to meet the demands of pre-service and in-service teachereducation and their ongoing professional development. Moststates do not have adequate systems to provide the necessarycadres of trained elementary level school teachers. It isthus important to enhance the roles and capacities ofteacher education institutions in India to support them tobecome globally competitive, professionally managed, andfuturistically progressive to cater to the needs of hugeback logs of untrained teachers. This training is crucial toensure that children at the elementary levels get qualityeducation in accordance with the National CurriculumFramework (NCF) 2005 and its basic tenets of child centered pedagogy.
