In addition to some of the mostacclaimed beaches in the world, the Indian ocean islandsoffer one of the planet's greatest concentrations ofbiodiversity and stunning landscapes that include activevolcanoes, sculpted canyons, and verdant seaside cliffs.Yet, despite its many attributes and accolades, the regionis not very well known within the global tourismmarketplace. This note is an analysis aimed at assessingopportunities for tourism integration among the four Indianocean island nations of Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, andSeychelles. To inform this regional analysis andrecommendations, the four reviews were conducted to providea basis for understanding each country's tourism sectorin terms of its development and current performance,contribution to the economy, and principal challenges. As abasis for analysis of the prospect of regional integration,the current state of tourism in each of the countries isconsidered within a regional context and recommendations forspecific regional tourism integration initiatives areprovided as guidance for the way forward. The tourism sectorreviews were completed through a combination of deskresearch and country visits that involved consultations witha range of stakeholders from the public sector, privatesector, civil society, and donor community. Each countryreview also contains a set of recommendations for addressingthe identified challenges. Included in the key issuesidentified for each country's tourism sector are thoseissues that have regional implications. This report isorganized as follows: section one gives introduction to theregional integration study; section two gives regionalintegration: the promises and the reality; section threepresents overview of four countries' tourism sectors;section four presents regional tourism integration overview;section five gives key issues for regional integration;section six gives recommendations; section seven gives wayforward; and section eight gives conclusion.
