The island nation of Madagascar has atreasure trove of tourism assets, ranging from wildlifeviewing to beach tourism to cultural encounters. Yet despiteits undeniable tourism potential, its growth has beenseverely stunted by years of political instability and lackof action on necessary policy reforms and initiatives. Whilethere is much that needs to be done for Madagascar tofulfill its potential in tourism, if adequately addressed,tourism can undoubtedly become a significant contributor tothe country's economic revival. This review of theMadagascar tourism sector has been conducted as part of alarger Indian ocean regional tourism integration study. Theprincipal objective of the synthesis is to highlightopportunities to strengthen the countries' tourismsectors through regional integration initiatives. Thisreport is structured as follows: section one givesintroduction to the Madagascar study; section two givesoverview of the Madagascar tourism sector; section threepresents key issues; section four gives recommendations; andsection five gives conclusion.
