【 摘 要 】
The last two decades have witnessed agrowing recognition of the importance of taking cultural andethnic diversity into consideration when designing andimplementing development programs. As societies around theworld have become more culturally diverse, and the roleculture plays in the formation of identity has become betterunderstood, governments are beginning to pay greaterattention to the management of cultural diversity and arebecoming more sensitive to issues of cultural exclusion.This book explores how taking cultural diversity intoaccount can affect the delivery of services both positivelyand negatively, and how local governments can respond to thechallenge of programming for and around diversity. Thefollowing chapter presents the current debate on the role ofgovernments, at all levels, in managing cultural diversity.Chapter three takes a more in-depth look at specific areasin which the demand for recognition of cultural practices inthe delivery of services is strongest. Chapter four examinespolicies pertaining to basic service delivery that canaddress and support cultural diversity. Finally, chapterfive summarizes the lessons learned from the design ofculturally sensitive policies for delivering services to adiverse population.
