Risk communication is an importantcomponent of disaster risk management (DRM) because itshapes people's perceptions of risk and influencestheir actions with respect to disaster preparedness anddisaster response. It also influences the interventiondecisions that are made throughout the disaster managementcycle. The credibility of the information source takes along time to build and needs to be well established before adisaster strikes. In Japan, the level of trust in governmentand other official communications was sorely testedfollowing the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichinuclear power station. Successful risk communication occurswhen there is holistic learning, facilitation, and trust. Inholistic learning, the gap in knowledge between theinformation sender and receiver is minimal. Hazard maps, booklets, and videos can all help narrow that gap when itcomes to disaster education and risk communication.
