Providing electricity to poor householdsin rural areas in Ethiopia is critical to improving thehealth and living conditions of the population, reducingpoverty, and stimulating growth. A project supported by theGlobal Partnership on Output-Based Aid (GPOBA) isaccelerating the pace of connections in electrified areasand fostering energy efficiency. The scheme provides aperformance-based subsidy to the state-owned utility inEthiopia linked to the delivery of pre-agreed outputs, including the connection and provision of services on asustainable basis. As part of the connection package, poorhouseholds receive two compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). Theproject has potential for scaling up with a futureInternational Development Association (IDA) loan to the utility.
