【 摘 要 】

This paper reviews the existingliterature on the impact of migrants networks on thepatterns of international migration. It covers thetheoretical channels at stake in the global effect of thenetworks. It identifies the key issues, namely the impact onsize, selection and concentration of the migration flows.The paper also reviews the empirical hurdles that theresearchers face in assessing the importance of networks.The key issues concern the choice of micro vs a macroapproach, the definition of a network, the access tosuitable data and the adoption of econometric methodsaccounting for the main features of those data. Finally, thepaper reports a set of estimation outcomes reflecting themain findings of the macro approach.
