This paper reviews the literature on thedevelopment consequences of internal armed conflict andstate fragility and analyzes the relationship using datafrom World Development Indicators, Ukraine CorporateDevelopment Project UCDP/Peace Research Institute of Oslo(PRIO) Armed Conflict Data (ACD), and World Bank statefragility assessments. Our main focus is on a set ofdevelopment indicators that capture seven of the MillenniumDevelopment Goals, but the author also look briefly into theeffect of conflict and fragility on growth, human rightsabuses, and democratization. The author analyze theserelationships using a variety of methods, averages byconflict and fragility status; cross-sectional regressionanalyses of change in each indicator over the time frame forwhich we have data; fixed-effects regression analyses of theimpact on each indicator for each five-year period1965-2009; as well as occasional panel time series modelsand matching techniques. In section two, the authorsummarizes the methodological choices and presents ourconflict data. Section three summarizes the results of ouranalysis. Finally, section four analyzes the effects ofinternal armed conflict on the attainment of the individualMillennium Development Goals (MDGs).
