【 摘 要 】
The initial occupational placements ofmale immigrants in the U.S. labor market vary significantlyby country of origin even when education and other factorsare taken into account.Does the heterogeneity persist overtime? Using data from the 1980, 1990, and 2000 U.S.Censuses, this study finds that the performance of migrantsfrom countries with lower initial occupational placementlevels improves at a higher rate compared with that ofmigrants originating from countries with higher initiallevels. Nevertheless, the magnitude of convergence suggestsfull catch-up is unlikely. Country specific attributes arefound to have less direct impact on the rate of assimilationthan on the initial performance.
