【 摘 要 】
This paper estimates the impact of thefull-time school program in Uruguay on standardized testscores of 6th grade students. The program lengthened theschool day from a half day to a full day, and providedadditional inputs to schools to make this possible, such asadditional teachers and construction of classrooms. Theprogram was not randomly placed, but targeted poor urbanschools. Using propensity score matching, the authorsconstruct a comparable group of schools, and show thatstudents in very disadvantaged schools improved in theirtest scores by 0.07 of a standard deviation per year ofparticipation in the full-time program in mathematics, and0.04 in language. While the program is expensive, it may, ifwell targeted, help address inequalities in education inUruguay, at an increase in cost per student not larger thanthe current deficit in spending between Uruguay and the restof the region.
