【 摘 要 】

There is an extensive literature onviolent conflicts such as the 1994 Rwandan genocide, but fewpapers examine the profiles of victims and perpetrators, ormore broadly the micro-level dynamics of widespreadviolence. This paper studies the demographic consequences ofthe Rwandan genocide and how the excess mortality due to theconflict was distributed in the population. Data collectedby the 2000 Demographic and Health Survey indicate thatalthough there were more deaths across the entirepopulation, adult males were the most likely to die. Usingthe characteristics of the survey respondent as a proxy forthe socio-economic status of the family dead, the resultsalso show that individuals with an urban or more educatedbackground were more likely to die. Over and above the humantragedies, a long-term cost of the genocide is thecountry's loss of productive skills.
