【 摘 要 】
Researchers in many fields, such asdemography, economics, and sociology, have establishedvarious data collection methodologies and principles toanswer a range of academic and policy questions onmigration. Although the progress has been impressive, somebasic challenges remain. This paper addresses some basic, yet fundamental, questions on identification ofinternational migrants and how their various demographic, personal, and human capital characteristics are captured viadifferent data sources. The critical issues are theconstruction of proper sampling frames in censuses, registers, and surveys and the design of questionnaires inhousehold, labor market, and other relevant surveys. Thepaper discusses how these data sources can be used to answerpolicy questions in areas such as labor markets, education,or poverty. The focus is on how some of the existingshortcomings in availability, quality, and relevance ofmigration data can be overcome via improvements in datacollection methods.
