【 摘 要 】

The report is an initiative of theAgriculture and Rural Development Department (ARD) of theWorld Bank. Aquaculture is the fastest-growing food sectorin the world and is expected to contribute more than 50percent of total fish consumption by 2020. Just over 90percent of aquaculture production originates in Asia, andnearly 70 percent in China alone. Efforts to expandaquaculture production to meet the ever increasing worldwidedemand for seafood continue. Although the boom ininternational demand for shrimp has drawn attention to thissector, the development potential of aquaculture stemspartly from the variety of products, production systems, andscales of production it covers. In comparison with thedominance of large-scale coastal aquaculture systems inLatin America, North America, and Europe, the vast majorityof aquaculture production in Asia is carried out in ruralareas, is integrated into existing farming systems, takesplaces on a small scale, depends on the cooperation offamily members, and involves large numbers of the ruralpopulation. Aquaculture is a promising business venture inmany contexts, and the private sector drives and plays amajor role in this. The aim of this study is to guide twopotential World Bank operations in Vietnam and Nigeria withthe aquaculture value chain as their focus. This paperdescribes the specific contexts of Vietnam and Nigeria andrecommends concrete project entry points and actions forgender integration, applying the lessons learned from past experiences.
