【 摘 要 】
This paper assesses the impact ofwork-related migration by males on the labor market behaviorof females in Nepal. Using data from the 2004 Nepalhousehold survey, the authors apply the InstrumentalVariable Full Information Maximum Likelihood method toaccount for unobserved factors that could simultaneouslyaffect males' decision to migrate and females'decision to participate in the labor market. The resultsindicate that male migration for work has a negative impacton the level of market work participation by the women leftbehind. The authors find evidence of substantialheterogeneity (based both on observable and unobservablecharacteristics) in the impact of male migration. Thefindings highlight the important gender dimension of theimpact of predominantly male worker migration on thewellbeing of sending households. The authors argue thatstrategies for economic development in Nepal should takeinto account such gender aspects of the migration dynamics.
