【 摘 要 】

The paper investigates the structure anddynamics of consumption inequality and inequality ofopportunity in Tanzania. The analysis covers the period 2001to 2012.It reveals moderate and declining levels ofconsumption inequality at the national level, but increasinginequalities between geographic regions. Spatialinequalities are mainly driven by the disparities ofhouseholds’ characteristics and endowments across geographiclocations. An important part of these endowments resultsfrom intergenerational transmission of parental background.Father’s education appears as the most important backgroundvariable affecting consumption and income in Tanzania.Without appropriate policy actions, there are few chancesfor the next generations to spring out of the poverty andinequality lived by their parents, engendering risks ofpoverty and inequality traps in the country.
