【 摘 要 】
Transnational terrorist organizationssuch as the Islamic State group (also known as ISIS/ISIL orDaesh) have shown an ability to attract radicalizedindividuals from many countries to join their ranks. Using anovel data set that reports countries of residence andeducational levels of a large sample of Daesh's foreignrecruits, this paper finds that a lack of economicopportunities -- measured by unemployment ratesdisaggregated by country and education level -- explainsforeign enrollment in the terrorist organization, especiallyfor countries that are geographically closer to the SyrianArab Republic.
