This study assesses the state of marketsand of jobs in market-linked agriculture in the towns ofSouth Sudan. It is based on a 2019 market trader survey endextensive qualitative work. Agriculture provides most urbanlivelihoods, and there is high potential for raisingproduction. However, insecurity has disrupted all elementsof agricultural markets, from production to thetransformation of produce, trade networks, and demand.Market activity is recovering, but food system value chainsare few and short. While most market activities aresmall-time and profits slim, most traders rely on theiractivities for most of their household’s income, and manyprovide jobs for hired helpers. Local products facecompetition from imports as insecurity makes it difficultfor aggregators to operate. A lack of funds, bad anddangerous roads, low demand, and inflation are the mostprominent obstacles to business in the markets. The study isone of a set of four reports assessing different aspects ofjobs in urban South Sudan in order to formulate policy for recovery.
