【 摘 要 】
Trees on farms are often overlooked inagricultural and natural resource research and policy inSub-Saharan Africa. This paper addresses this gap using datafrom the Living Standards Measurement Study–IntegratedSurveys on Agriculture in five countries: Ethiopia, Malawi,Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda. Trees on farms arewidespread. On average, one third of rural smallholders growtrees. They account for an average of 17 percent of totalannual gross income for tree-growing households and 6percent for all rural households. Gender, land and laborendowments, and especially forest proximity and nationalcontext are key determinants of on-farm tree adoption andmanagement. These new, national-scale insights on theprevalence, economic contribution and determinants of treeson farms in Africa lay the basis for exploring theinteraction of agriculture, on-farm tree cultivation, andforestry. This will improve our understanding of rurallivelihood dynamics.
