Povertyisalong-lastingsocietalproblem,especiallyindevelopingcountriesandruralareas.Climatechangeimpactisexpectedtodisproportionallyworsenpovertyconditions,especiallyfornaturalresourcesandagriculturaldependenthouseholdslikelytobenegativelyaffectedbyfloodinganddrought.ThisthesisexploreswhetherandhowEcosystem-basedadaptation(EbA),whichusesbiodiversityandecosystemservicestohelppeopletoadapttotheadverseimpactsofclimatechange,influencesthelivelihoodsofpoorruralhouseholdsinsouthwestChina.Itfocusesonanecosystem-basedadaptationprojectunderChina’spolicy;;GrainforGreen”implementedbythegovernmentandtargetingforestcommunities.Itaimsatexploringthelinksbetweenecosystem-basedadaptation(EbA)andpovertyalleviationandadoptsabasic-needsapproach(BNA)tomeasurepoverty.Usinganordinallogisticregressionmodelandrelatedmoderationanalysisweexplorethefactorsthatinfluencebothhouseholds;;fulfillmentofbasicneedsandperceptionofwell-being.Wefoundthat:a)EbAiscorrelatedwithsubjectivefulfillmentofbasicneeds;b)EbAaffectshouseholdsandcanbothhelpalleviateandaggravatepoverty,dependingonprojectdesignandhowanEbAprojectmayaffect ahousehold’soveralllivelihoodandc)limitedhouseholdgenericcapacitywillconstrainthebeneficialeffectsofEbAonpoorerhouseholds.TheseresultscaninformfutureEbAbasedprojectsinChinaandotherpartsofthedevelopingworldwhereruralhouseholdsfacenegativeimpactsofclimatechange.
