【 摘 要 】

What are the common characteristicsamong radicalized individuals, willing to justify attackstargeting civilians? Drawing on information on attitudestoward extreme violence and other characteristics of 30,787individuals from 27 developing countries around the world, and employing a variety of econometric techniques, thispaper identifies the partial correlates of extremism. Theresults suggest that the typical extremist who supportsattacks against civilians is more likely to be young, unemployed and struggling to make ends meet, relativelyuneducated, and not as religious as others, but more willingto sacrifice own life for his or her beliefs. Gender andmarital status are not found to explain significantly theindividual-level variation in attitudes toward extremism.Although these results may vary in magnitude andsignificance across countries and geographic regions, theyare robust to various sensitivity analyses.
